encountering the animal spirit (kalari -indian martial arts)
sat 10:30-12:30, surya lounge
The Kalari practicioner is commonly refered to as Abhyasi, the
repeating one. In Kalari we build the house from the foundation up.
So our first lesson will be to "go down into the pit" of body and
spirit. In this first session, the Abhyasis will be innitiated to the
key elements or the practice: Steadfastness, grounding, focus,
aligment, flow and sensory awareness. After set of the unique Surya
Namaskara of the Kalari tradition we will start with a characteristic
nadi-cleansing exercise called "Kalugal". Finally we will encounter
the Animal Spirits of Southern India as we conclude our first session
with "Vadivu", Animal Postures of ancient simplicity and power. We
will conclude with a small Q&A.

cultivating the flow (kalari -indian marital arts)
sun 2-4pm, prana lounge
The second session will take the practice from a more moved yet
grounded approach to a more dynamic setting. Every Kalari class in
the Vadakkan Sampradayam style of Kalari will start the main practice
with one form: The Vandanam, an ageless sequence alive with grace,
power and flow. It is in this form that we salute Prana Agni, the
fire of life, and the sacred space of the Kalari. The Vandanam
includes many of the animal postures that we have been introduced to
in the first session, as well as a set of absolutely unique
movements. We will also take a first glance at concept of Shiva and
Shakti and the corresponding forms balancing the abstract principles
of male and female energy. We will conclude with a small Q&A.
