beauty & the beast
sat 8-10am, surya lounge
Beauty is one perspective on Brahman’s attributes and is a possible touchstone from which we can gain insight into the nature of reality. Brahman could be called the Divine and, as such, is inherent in all things. Beauty can be discovered in all things because it inherently exists in all things – in the same sense the Divine exists in all things. But we need a “technology” – like yoga or art – to be able to perceive it. The role of the yogi or artist is to create a vehicle through which the appreciation of Beauty (or Brahman) can be understood.

where is now
sat 4:30-6:30pm, surya lounge
We “know” mundane things like how to tie our shoes or the shape of a square. We may feel we know how to do a headstand or how to breathe through the nose. We many know that we are in a yoga studio doing a practice. However, these things are perhaps so mundane that we scarcely know that we know them. What more do we “know” about the upper limbs of yoga – Dharana, Dhyana, and Samadhi – and how do we expand that range of knowledge?

tripsichore -wild & free
sun 10:30-12:30pm, shakti lounge
Tripsichore creates works that fuse the spirituality of yoga with lyricism. Tripsichore contends that apart from competency and mastery, creating spectacular asanas has much to do with the energetic intention of the practitioner. The technique focuses on uniting the mind and body through the use of breath and the movement of energy. Tripsichore’s linking of postures is innovative, yet the methods used are respectful of orthodox traditions. The goal of this workshop is to understand the beauty and energy of some of the more spectacular postures and to explore their expressive potential.
We will analyse technical approaches to breathing, backbends, and inverted work, all with the aim of explaining and exploring how energy flows through the body to create the forms, shapes, and ultimately, meaning. We will focus on the expressive potential of backbends, Tripsichore Sun Salutations, and inverted postures and learn to transform these into the choreography of Yoga Theatre.
